A dichotomy of slapstick meets social commentaryposted May 22, 2008 02:12
Like most David E. Kelly vehicles, this one has plenty of weird. (See: Jerry "Hands" Espensen.) It's often eye-rolling and stands as filler for this otherwise excellent show.

Alan Shore's (James Spader) diatribes against often sensitive topics makes for edge-of-your-seat television every time. While defending a Gitmo detainee:

"Like human rights. I agree that the Executive Branch has a particular expertise. In fact, I think they?ve been brilliant. Calling the prisoners enemy combatants instead of prisoners so we can end run the Geneva Convention, and torture them? Brilliant! Basing the camp in Cuba so the Constitution won?t really get in our way? Brilliant! And under the Pentagon?s new draft guideline, this is my favorite, I?m sure it will be yours, we?ll have little tribunals in Guantanamo that allow suspects to be jailed for life. Or even executed on evidence that would never be admissible in civilian or military court. Imagine being able to execute somebody on triple hearsay, or on totally coerced confession. Brilliant!"

And while I'm no closet Shatnerite, the mad cow-ridden gun-wielding Denny Crane provides spot on comic relief. Although I could do without the "sleep overs."

And how could you disagree with this exchange? No other show on television is delivering this type of commentary on modern-day culture.

Alan Shore: You know what I miss most about our country, Denny? Not the loss of our civil rights so much as our compassion, our soul, our humanity.

Denny Crane: Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh. Soul, that's a religious thing. State... church... it's unconstitutional for the United States to have a soul.

Alan Shore: Apparently. We seem to be becoming a mean people. Learned Hand once said, "Liberty lies in our hearts, and once it dies there, no constitution can save it."

Denny Crane: Just once I wish you'd quote a Republican.

Alan Shore: I want a kindler and gentler nation.

RoseanneThe Commercial Show (episode #9119)
Oldie but goodie...posted April 17, 2008 07:36
Great episode in which you get the best of Roseanne at the Rodbell's diner (boss Martin Mull), and Darlene becomes the girl the commercial. The ad at the end is priceless.

Rick Dees guests as the commercial producer, someone absolutely no one remembers as a radio personality of KIIS FM in LA in the 80s and 90s. He thought he was going up in the world.. it maybe the highlight of his lame career.

Great dialog dominates. Near the top of the show, Jackie enters the Conner's kitchen:

Jackie: Guys, what are you doing?
Roseanne: Chewing. What about you Dan?
Dan: I'm a little ahead of you dear, I just swallowed.
