Pushing Daisies meets MiBposted June 19, 2008 01:46
... in a good way.

I wasn't going to watch this show. My biggest hurdle was the fact that the show airs on "ABC family". I was prepared for a "Red State" saccharin lump of programming that was too violent for Nickelodeon but too cheap looking for single digit tv channels

I was wrong

Sure it's not the general dystopian sci-fi we've come to expect in our post 2000 tv fare. and yes the effects sometimes rival the the worst of the best of the BBC effects department. Swinging from ok to just plain goofy - it's oddly not distracting.

"The Middleman" is about a young artist girl that who witnesses a bizarre mishap of science and is recruited by a "Man in Black" type character that shows up to cover it up.

the show shines with rapid fire dialogue and pop culture references which - i stress here -- they get right! I found the main characters to be archetypal without being predictable. While the pilot moved swiftly, and didn't bog down into too much back story.

Generally I'd call it a fun light-weight snack of a show. Something juscy and sweet - but it won't ruin your dinner. Like a plump slice of watermelon for your hot summer viewing pleasure.

-- and if you missed it - the pilot is currently available for free via iTunes, so you really have no excuse.

Long Drive off a Short Pierposted October 26, 2007 22:42
A great show that never had a chance.

Canceled after it's 2nd showing, Drive only managed to get 4 shows out into the airwaves before vanishing into the dark soulless pit that FOX-CORP shoves anything that might make people think that good TV fiction is preferable to American Idol.

The series is set across the backdrop of an illegal automobile road race with the central focus being on the competitors and eventually on the puppet masters behind the race

One suspects the FOX was happy with the pilot which stared the rather bland Ivan Sergei as the main character Alex Tully, but became enraged when Drive creator Tim Minear, gave the role to fan hero, Firefly and Serenity star Nathan Fillion instead.

Episodes 5 and 6 were filmed but have never been aired despite FOX's many bait and switch promises to the contrary

I love your review of The Middleman. I didn't know much about the show before but reading that made me really want to check it out.
